The Respect to Bill Reid Pole Website

The website is an online documentation of a Pole Raising Ceremony that took place in the Haida Village on October 1, 2000. In addition to the pole raising itself, Unlimited the website tells the story of the carving of the pole through a timeline perspective. The production leads the user through the carving process, provides biography of the artist including a video taped interview, and documents the day's celebrations from the blessings of the Haida Elders to the actual raising of the pole by hand. The website contains 15 minutes of video, 10 minutes of audio, including Aboriginal song, Flash, dynamic HTML and other features. A Flash animation of the pole was created to show the various meanings of each family crest to educate the user about the significance of the different aspects of a totem pole. The website allowed the Museum the opportunity to provide information about the carving traditions of a First Nations people of the Northwest Coast of British Columbia would not have otherwise been possible through traditional exhibitry.
